Bus sliced in half after lorry drives across the road at speed killing 18 and leaving dozens injured

Eighteen people have been killed and dozens injured after a truck crashed into a bus in a Moscow suburb.

Russia's Emergency Services Ministry has confirmed the youngest victim was a six-year-old girl.

According to reports the green and white bus was carrying 60 people when a lorry crashed into it, splitting the vehicle in half and forcing other drivers to swerve wildly out of its way.

The crash occurred near Oznobishino, a Moscow suburb, about 25 miles south of the city centre this afternoon.

An eyewitness video of the crash, which has been broadcast on state television, shows the lorry driving across the road at high speed before crashing into the bus.

    At least five of the victims of the crash have been identified, including the six-year-old girl and her 38-year-old mother, according to RT.com.

    The website has reported rescuers are having to dig rescuers out of tarmac which was being carried by the lorry.

    A total of 30 ambulance crews were called to the area following the crash.

    Helicopters were also used to transport the injured away from the scene.

    The driver of the truck is believed to be a 46-year-old Armenian citizen, according to RT.com.
    He is reportedly currently in hospital where he is being questioned by police.

    According to reports, death rates from Russian road accidents are higher than in most Western countries, and lawmakers are moving to toughen drunk-driving penalties.
