WASHINGTON—The U.S. military launched four airstrikes Saturday in northern Iraq designed to defend members of the Yazidi religious minority who were coming under attack from Islamic extremists, U.S. officials said.
American aircraft also conducted a third airdrop of food and water for thousands of Yazidis stranded on Mount Sinjar, officials said. One C-17 and two C-130 aircraft dropped 3,800 gallons of drinking water and 16,128 meals, and were supported by U.S. fighter aircraft.
The U.S. airstrikes relied on a mix of U.S. fighter jets and unmanned aircraft, and followed a set of three strikes on Friday. While Friday's strikes were intended to keep the militant group calling itself the Islamic State away from the city of Erbil, Saturday's strikes were the first aimed at safeguarding Yazidis.
The strikes began minutes after President Barack Obama spoke about the effort Saturday morning at the White House.
The first two strikes occurred around 11:20 a.m. EDT, according to a statement by the U.S. military's Central Command, in charge of American forces in the Middle East. A third was conducted around 11:40 a.m., and a fourth came at about 3 p.m.

In the second strike following soon after, U.S. forces struck three more Islamic State vehicles—two more armed carriers and a technical vehicle. In the first, U.S. fighters and drones struck one of two Islamic State armored personnel carriers seen firing on Yazidi civilians near the town of Sinjar, and destroyed it.
In the third strike, U.S. aircraft located and fired on two additional carriers and an armed truck, and were successful in destroying the intended targets.
In the fourth strike, the U.S. located and struck another armed personnel carrier near Sinjar, with indications that the strike was successful in destroying it, military officials said. All aircraft safely exited the area, the officials said.
Since Thursday, in coordination with the Iraqi government, U.S. military aircraft have delivered more than 52,000 meals and more than 10,600 gallons of drinking water to thousands of Yazidis trapped on a northern mountainside by the rapid advance of militants, Central Command officials said in a statement.
U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel spoke with U.K. Defense Chief Michael Fallon on Saturday about U.S. and U.K. efforts to address the humanitarian crisis in northern Iraq, according to Rear Adm. John Kirby, the Pentagon press secretary. U.S. officials said Mr. Fallon pledged to assist with humanitarian relief operations, and the two defense officials agreed to stay in contact.
President Obama on Saturday spoke with French President François Hollande and U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron about the humanitarian situation in Iraq.
The U.S. strikes on Friday intended to halt the Islamic State's advance on the Kurdish capital of Erbil
In the first round, U.S. F/A-18 jet fighters used 500-pound laser-guided bombs to strike a mobile artillery piece. In the second set, a remotely piloted aircraft struck a mortar position controlled by the Islamic State. When militants returned to the site moments later, another drone strike was launched, killing the fighters, officials said. In a third round, four F/A-18 aircraft struck a stationary convoy of seven vehicles and a mortar position near Erbil.
Earlier Saturday, Mr. Obama said that U.S. forces were positioned to help break the siege on the Yazidis. He said that the U.S. would use military force to support Kurdish forces and help protect the Yazidis from the Islamic State, which is accused of attempting to perpetrate genocide on the religious minority.
Mr. Obama indicated that the U.S. would continue its military involvement in Iraq for an extended period, but said that airstrikes and other aid would only help to contain the threat from Sunni militants until Iraq's leaders form a new, inclusive government to address the crisis.
