Companies use team-building activities as tools to promote
employee bonding and team cohesion. The activities include a variety of games
and exercises designed or customized especially for this purpose. Businesses
that want to promote physical activity among employees as well as building team
spirit should seek outdoor team-building activities.
Paintball
Paintball involves the elimination of an opposing team using
capsules of paint propelled by a paintball-marking device. Resembling actual
automatic weapons used by law enforcement and the military, the
paintball-marking device sends a capsule to hit an opposing team member, thus
eliminating him from play. The team with the most members still in the game at
the end wins. Teams play on outdoor fields set up with varying terrain and
edifices, such as mock-ups of crashed airplanes and abandoned buildings. Paintball
requires team members to communicate with one another effectively while
employing fast, decisive thinking.
Orienteering
With orienteering, teams use a map and compass to reach an
ultimate goal, which usually features refreshments and a prize for the winning
team. Skills involved include decision-making and strategic route-planning. In
a large public space, such as a wildlife preserve, organizers give teams final
coordinates and key landmarks along the way, allowing teams to use their
compasses and maps to find the location. Team members bond by working together
to identify their roles, solve problems and meet challenges.
Scottish Highland Games
Scotland is well known for its highland games dating back several
centuries. Games organizers set up activity centers for each game. Games
include a log carry relay, tug of war, hurling wellies (throwing large rain
boots) and stone-tossing to name a few. Participants break into teams, or
clans, if organizers wish to stay with a Scottish theme. Scorekeepers monitor
each game, keep time and record which team wins each event. At the end of the
day, organizers present the awards and prizes over light refreshments. Teams
build bonds and improve morale and motivation through the activities.
Softball
Businesses often organize company softball events for their
employees. Not as difficult as baseball, softball is fun for people of all
fitness levels and both genders. Organizers will need to reserve a baseball
field at a local public park or school and hire a referee not associated with
the company. Company officials present trophies or modest prizes to the winning
team over refreshments or a barbecue.
