Lengthy process: The High court is holding daily hearings but it could be weeks before the decide whether to confirm the death sentence handed to the four men on September 13
The High Court in New Delhi said it would begin hearing prosecution arguments tomorrow, while defence solicitors file their appeals against the convictions and sentences.
Judge Pratibha Rani said: 'We have to deal with this as expeditiously as possible because the sword of death is hanging over them.'
It could take weeks or months for the court to hear arguments, review evidence and consider the appeals before deciding whether to confirm the execution orders.
A review is required for all death penalty cases in India, and the same court is hearing the men's appeals.
Media frenzy: In the weeks after the attack on the 23-year-old student the country was gripped by protests demanding that the men be given the sentence

For today's hearing, the men walked under police escort from a bus into the High Court complex.
In sentencing the four, trial court Judge Yogesh Khanna said the crime had 'shocked the collective conscience' of India.
The four had been joyriding through New Delhi on a bus on the night of December 16 when they lured the 23-year-old woman and her male friend into boarding.
They then beat the friend and took turns raping the woman and abusing her.
She died from internal injuries two weeks later.
Another defendant hanged himself in prison, though his family insists he was killed.
And an 18-year-old who was a juvenile at the time of the attack was sentenced in August to a maximum of three years in a reform home.
Shocking details: During the trial horrifying details of the attack were read to the court which only further enraged the crowds clamouring for the deaths sentence
'I WANT TO SEE THEIR REMORSE', SAYS VICTIM'S MOTHER AFTER SENTENCING ON SEPTEMBER 13
By Kritika Sharma
For the first time in nine months, she smiled without any hesitation and doubt.
The tears were still there, welling in her eyes, but the calmness on her face was rare, seen perhaps for the first time since her 23-year-old daughter was gang-raped and murdered by six brutes on a moving bus in December 2012.
A protester shouts slogans and carries a placard during rally in the aftermath of the attack last year
'My daughter has finally got justice today,' said the mother with a sigh after the fast-track judge awarded death to the four adult convicts.
The woman whose only daughter was brutalised in the worst possible manner now wishes to see guilt and fear on the faces of the convicts when they are taken for hanging.
'I am relieved and the family is finally at peace today. Now I wish to see the faces of all the four accused when they are taken to the gallows. I want to see the remorse on their faces for what they did to my daughter,' said the victim's mother.
Her father expressed satisfaction over the sentencing and thanked the police, media and people in general for supporting them in their fight for justice.
'Our belief in the Constitution of India has strengthened today. I would like to thank all those who supported us,' he said.
'The verdict will act as a deterrent and I think nobody will dare to do this kind of thing again. We have full faith in the judicial system of our country,' said the girl's father.
He said his fight will continue till the accused are hanged.
