HR MANAGEMENT - Combating Absenteeism at Work

COMBATING ABSENTEEISM AT WORK

By Faudzil Harun

Here are some suggestion in combating absenteeism :

1.  Change Management Style

We are all aware of the fact that when employees call in ill, it does not mean they
are truly physically ill to work. One reason outside of illness, that employees are
absent is stress, and the number reason employees are stressed has to do with
their relationship with their manager or supervisor.

Management styles that are too authoritarian tend to promote high level of
absenteeism among employees. Authoritarian managers are managers who
have poor listening skills, do not communicate well, set unreachable goals, and
are inflexible. In other words, they yell too much, do not welcome different
opinions, not friendly and make others feel that only the manager is always right.

2.  Provide Pleasant Workplace Condition

A workplace is a second home for employees. They spent 8 to 12 hours of their
time at the workplace each day. Provide pleasant workplace condition (clean
environment, sufficient facilities, attractive benefits etc.) that makes employees
     love to be in.

3.  Provide Motivating Incentives

Attractive incentives that recognize good attendance will motivate employees
to keep up good record of their attendance.

Example of Incentives for Perfect Attendance :

     ● Cashing-in unused sick leave.
     ● 2 days bonus pay for every perfect monthly attendance.
     ● Free meals for perfect attendance.
     ● Entitlement for lucky draw, free shopping voucher etc.
     ● Early return on every pay day.
     ● Free gift, etc.

4.  Establish Attendance Policy

     ● Take prompt action against lateness.
     ● Take attendance for consideration in salary increment, bonus and promotion.
     ● Consider recommending the employee for a complete medical examination,
allowing unpaid leave for settlement of personal problem.
     ● In some circumstances, allowing flexible working hours can help to reduce
        absenteeism.
