How Do I Say a Word of Appreciation to an Employee
for His Performance?
by Maggie McCormick, Demand Media
There is no doubt that appreciating
your employees can improve morale and prompt increased productivity, but cash
bonuses may not be the incentive that employees want. Inc. Magazine reports
that employees generally prefer a face-to-face word of thanks along with their
performance reported to upper management. The key to doing this is to offer
personalized messages of appreciation to each employee. Understand your
employees, what they do and what types of thanks they most desire.
Step 1
Write down your employee’s
contributions to a project. You want to know exactly what the employee is doing
so that you can be specific in offering your appreciation.
Step 2
Visit the employee’s work area. If you
schedule a meeting, the employee may worry that he has done something wrong. It’s
more appropriate to drop by the employee’s work space to express your
appreciation.
Step 3
Tell your employee that you appreciate
his hard work.
Step 4
Explain in detail the individual’s
contributions. It’s better to tell an employee that he created a well-designed
presentation or that his idea save the company $10,000 than it is to simply say
that he is doing a good job. He will feel more valued as an employee if he
understands you recognize his specific contributions.
Step 5
Give the employee a thank-you note or
bonus. If you have the budget, a small gift certificate can also make him feel
appreciated, but you should deliver it in person, along with your personal
words of appreciation.
