#1: Amazing Structures

  • Russia houses ‘Tsar Kolokol’ bell which is the largest bell and has a height of 6.14m or 20ft, weighing 223 tons.
  • This bell is in Kremlin, Moscow which is the world’s biggest medieval fortress to have been built in the 14th and 15th centuries.

#2: Massive Expanse!

  • Russia is the largest country in terms of land area, in the world.
  • In terms of population, it occupies the ninth position.
  • The country covers 1/7th the land area of the world and hence spans across three time zones.
  • The neighbours of Russia include China, Ukraine, Norway and North Korea.

#3: Lakes & Mountains

  • The lakes of Russia contain one-fourth of the world’s fresh waters.
  • Lake Baikal in Siberia is the deepest lake of the world.
  • Lake Ladoga is the largest in Europe and spans 400km.

  • Russian Federation is the official name of Russia.
  • Though Russian is the official language, a wide variety of languages are spoken across the vast expanse of the country.
  • The currency of Russia is called ‘Ruble’.
  • The Soviet Union (USSR) was dissolved in 1991. Till then it had occupied much of Northern Asia and Eastern Europe from 1922. It was a socialist state till then. The states included Lithuania, Georgia, Latvia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and others.
  • The Residence of the Russian President is in the Kremlin fortress, Moscow.
  • Along with the United States, United Kingdom, China and France, the country is a permanent member in the United Nations Security Council.

  • The Soviet Union in 1957 launched the world’s first space sattelite, Sputnik.
  • Russia also takes pride in having been the first to launch man to the moon, though the United States landed there first.

  • St. Petersburg was known as Petrograd from 1914 to 1924 and Leningrad from 1924 to 1991.
  • The city has a 100 concert organizations, more than 80 theatres, 62 movie theatres, 45 art galleries, 221 museums, 80 night clubs and 2000 libraries.
  • The city also hosts a hundred art and cultural festivals out of which, at least half of them are international events.

  • Russian is also one of the five most spoken languages in the world.
  • Cyrillic Alphabet is used by Russian instead of Latin’s.
