Bulimia nervosa, or bulimia as it's commonly referred to, is an eating disorder characterised by excessive over-eating followed by periods of starving or purging. Like anorexics, people with bulimia have a distorted body perception believing themselves to be larger than they actually are.
Bulimics will often binge on food in secret then try to rid themselves of calories through vomiting, taking laxatives, diuretics, diet pills or by over-exercising. Overwhelming feelings of shame or anxiety often accompany food binges.
Young women most commonly develop bulimia but it can also affect men and women of different ages.
