FLIGHT MH17 - Pilot’s wife in shock

New Straits Times

KUALA LUMPUR: The pilot of flight MH17 had last con tacted his wife minutes before he boarded the plane to fly back to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam.
Captain Wan Amran Wan Hussin’s wife, who only wished to be known only as Mariam, told the New Straits Times that she was shocked to hear what had happened when she randomly checked her phone after performing prayers last night.
“I had just finished my prayers and decided to checked my handphone as the battery had earlier gone flat.
“I was shocked to see a message from my children’s ustaz (religious teacher) informing me that a Malaysia Airlines plane had crashed.
“I was taken aback and immediately switched on the television to see what was going on,” she said when contacted at 12.10am.
Mariam said she had yet to receive any information from MAS despite it being common practice for the airline to contact the family members of crew whenever any flight was delayed.
The mother of two said she last had any contact with her husband about 4pm (Malaysian time) when he sent her a watsapp message.
“He texted me just before he was about to board the plane home from Amsterdam.
“He said that he was going to board the plane home...this is what he always did whenever he was flying. He would constantly contact me to inform what was happening,” she said.
Mariam said her husband had flown to Amsterdam on Tuesday and the crew had rested in the Dutch capital for three days before their flight home.
Meanwhile, one of the crew members, Ahmad Hakimi Hanapi who is in his late 20s is believed to be on board MH17.
Hakimi who is also a MAS pilot had a baby about six months ago, a close family member said.
A family member of crew Eugene Choo Jin Leong who did not want to be named, confirmed that he was on board the plane.
She, however, declined to be interviewed further.
