HEALTHY EATING - Coconut oil

Coconut oil may have come under fire in recent years
but this wonder oil has a wealth of health benefits.

Coconut oil
Coconut oil is a useful natural ingredient for its many
health benefits and medicinal uses.

Containing antibacterial, antiviral and anti-fungal properties (lauric and caprylic acid), coconut oil can be useful to ward off skin infections such as acne, and strengthen skin tissue and hair follicles. It’s also a super rich source of Vitamin E.

Where it's found

Coconut oil is an edible oil extracted from the kernel of older coconuts. Harvested from the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera) throughout the tropical world, it's long been the number one source of fat in the diets of millions of people.

How it can benefit you

Coconut oil can promote good health in a number of ways it can strengthen the cardiovascular system, assist in weight loss, provide nourishment to skin and hair, increase our immunity, improve our digestive system, and boost energy levels whilst also helping to strengthen bones.

Naturopath Mim Beim says:

Buy oils that are not heat treated. Raw can be a guide, but it's not clear which are the best products, unlike olive oil, where you know to buy extra virgin. There is no regulation around coconut oil yet.
Even though it is an oil, coconut oil helps you burn off fats. Use it in cooking (e.g stir fry, not deep fry) and externally as a moisturiser for dry skin and eczema. It contains Caprylic acid which is antifungal, this is good if you have candida or psoriasis (psoriasis is a skin condition that often has a fungal component). If you have dandruff or psoriasis on your scalp, massage in coconut oil overnight and wash out in the morning.
