MH370: Don’t force the issue shut by rushing death certs, say kin

PETALING JAYA (April 21): The government should not rush to issue death certificates for those on board Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, their relatives said today.
The next of kin of the passengers were reacting to the government’s offer on Sunday to issue the death certificates and to provide financial assistance to help them through their difficulties.
"We believe that until they have conclusive proof that the plane crashed with no survivors, they have no right to attempt to settle this case with the issuance of death certificates and final payoffs," members who claimed to represent 28 families of the passengers said on their facebook page, MH370 Families, today.
"We don't expect that they find all of the plane or all of the bodies. But we do expect at least a tiny bit of concrete evidence.
"Therefore until a strong proof is established, they have an obligation to make regular pre-payments to the families in need.
"They also have an obligation to exert themselves beyond repeated attempts to force a closure of the issue, not for the benefit of the next of kins (NOKs), but possibly to remove the scrutiny their mismanagement is under," the post read.
"All these matters we have never discussed in the past. How can they jump in less than a day from a discussion about the ongoing search of the Bluefin-21, and what might happen next if the current search area doesn't surface anything.
"This announcement comes just after the prime minister of Australia said he was certain the noises heard were from the MH370 blackbox. Just before that, the Malaysian prime minister said much the same thing.
"If they are so certain, why not continue with the search and find that plane?" they asked.
Yesterday, it was reported that the next of kin of passengers of the MH370 had proposed to the Malaysian government’s Next-of-Kin Committee the kind of financial assistance they would need soon.
Committee chairman Datuk Hamzah Zainuddin, who is also Deputy Foreign Minister, said their (family members’) proposals would be brought to the meeting of the committee on Monday for study and deliberation, and the government would try its best to help them go through this very trying time.
